Large family home volumes

Upper North Shore moves typically involve 4–5 bedroom homes with double garages,
multiple living areas, and substantial gardens. We plan accordingly — often with a
3-person crew and a full day allocation.

🌳

Driveway and access planning

Large lots with established trees can create access challenges for removal trucks. We
confirm driveway dimensions for every Upper North Shore booking.

📈

High-value suburb demand

Gordon, Killara, and St Ives attract premium movers — antiques, pianos, and large
furniture are common. We handle these as standard.

🚂

Pacific Highway & rail access

Many Upper North Shore families are semi-downsizing to nearby Chatswood or Lane Cove.
Short-to-medium distance moves within the corridor are very common.

10 Tips for a Smooth Upper North Shore Move

Operational advice specific to Upper North Shore properties, drawn from moves our crews complete in the area every week.

  • Book a 3-man crew for any 4+ bedroom homeWahroonga, Pymble and St Ives family homes have more furniture, more rooms and longer driveways than smaller properties. The third crew member halves total load time on relay-loading driveway homes.
  • Measure driveway truck access on quoteMany Upper North Shore driveways have bends, grade changes or overhead branches that restrict truck size. Knowing whether to send a 4-tonne or 8-tonne — or whether to relay-load from the street — before move day saves 2–3 hours.
  • Plan around bushland block vegetation rulesKu-ring-gai Council prohibits cutting trees or shrubs to widen access. Disassembling oversize items (wardrobes, dining tables, four-poster beds) to fit existing garden paths is often necessary in St Ives and bushland Wahroonga.
  • Protect Federation timber staircases with thick paddingFederation and inter-war family homes have heavy, often-carved timber staircases that mark easily. We pad every stair tread and balustrade contact point — request a heritage stair protocol on quote if your home is heritage-listed.
  • Schedule outside Pacific Highway clearway hoursIf your property has Pacific Highway frontage or loading from a side street within 50m, schedule outside 6:30–9:30 AM and 3:30–7 PM weekday windows. We default Pacific Highway frontages to 10am–2pm.
  • Book private-school-year-start moves 5–6 weeks aheadLate January and early February peak demand from family relocations into Knox, Pymble Ladies, Abbotsleigh and Ravenswood catchments. Saturdays in this window book out 6 weeks ahead.
  • Disclose pianos and antiques at quoteUpper North Shore homes often have grand pianos, antique sideboards, oversize dining tables and four-poster beds. Stairs-and-piano dolly setups need to be brought from depot. Disclose at quote so we send the right kit.
  • Use the M1 for cross-Sydney legsUpper North Shore’s M1 access via Pearces Corner and Pacific Highway entrance ramps gives the fastest cross-Sydney routing. For Inner West or Eastern Suburbs destinations, M1 → Lane Cove Tunnel → Cross City Tunnel saves 30+ minutes vs surface streets.
  • Plan empty-nester downsizing storageIf you’re vacating a Wahroonga family home before settling on a Killara or Lindfield apartment, storage gives you 2–6 months of breathing room. Long-term storage discounts apply at 6+ months.
  • Reject quotes that don’t ask about driveway lengthThe single biggest variable in Upper North Shore moves is driveway distance from street to house. A quote that doesn’t ask about driveway length, truck access width, and the loading path will balloon on move day. We always measure access on quote.

Moving in Upper North Shore: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions Upper North Shore movers actually ask.

⚠️ Upper North Shore Moving Risks — What to Watch Out For

These are the situations that cause the most stress on move day — all avoidable with the right planning.

Long driveways and large homesQuarter-acre+ blocks in Wahroonga, Pymble and St Ives mean trucks often park 30–60m from front door — adds significant load time
Bushland block vegetationKu-ring-gai Council vegetation rules restrict cutting/clearing — established gardens limit truck routes to the house
Grand staircases in Federation homesEdwardian and inter-war family homes have wide but heavy timber staircases — soft-padding for protection adds time
Pacific Highway clearwaysStrict no-stop windows 6:30–9:30 AM and 3:30–7 PM affect access to Turramurra, Wahroonga and Gordon station-adjacent properties
School-year intake peaksLate January and early February peaks coincide with private school year start — Knox, Pymble Ladies, Abbotsleigh, Ravenswood family relocations
✓ Hire A Mover handles every one of these — extended crew for long-driveway properties, bushland-friendly access planning, heritage staircase protection, clearway-aware scheduling, school-year peak booking priority.
How much does an Upper North Shore move cost?
Standard Hire A Mover rate is $220/hr (2 men + truck) or $300/hr (3 men + truck), GST included. Upper North Shore moves typically run longer than Sydney apartment moves because of larger homes, longer driveways and more furniture per property. A typical 4-bedroom Wahroonga family home runs 8–12 hours; a 3-bedroom Lindfield home runs 6–9 hours. We recommend a 3-man crew for any home with a long driveway or 4+ bedrooms.

Property Type Typical Cost Est. Time
2-Bed Apt (Killara/Roseville) $660–$880 3–4 hrs
3-Bed Lindfield/Roseville House $1,320–$1,980 6–9 hrs
4-Bed Pymble/Turramurra House $1,980–$3,300 7–11 hrs
5-Bed Wahroonga Family Home $2,640–$4,200 9–14 hrs
St Ives Bushland Block House $2,400–$3,900 8–13 hrs
My driveway is long — how does that affect the move?
Long driveways are the defining Upper North Shore access challenge. Many Wahroonga, Pymble, St Ives and West Pymble properties have driveways 30–60 metres from the street to the front door, sometimes with bends or grade changes. We assess on quote and either reverse the truck up the driveway (when width allows), or set up a relay with dollies. A 3-man crew significantly speeds the relay loading. We don’t add a surcharge for long driveways — but they do increase total move time.
How do you handle bushland block properties in St Ives or Wahroonga?
Ku-ring-gai Council enforces strict vegetation rules in bushland conservation zones (most of St Ives, parts of Wahroonga, Killara West). We cannot cut or damage trees or shrubs to widen access. On quote we map the natural access route and identify which oversize items may need disassembly to fit garden paths. Heritage-listed gardens (like some Pymble Hill properties) get extra protection on dolly wheels.
My Federation home has a grand staircase — anything special needed?
Federation and inter-war homes throughout Lindfield, Gordon, Wahroonga and Killara have wide but very heavy original timber staircases, often with carved balustrades. We use thick blanket padding on every stair tread and balustrade contact point, and never slide furniture across the timber. Heavy items (pianos, wardrobes, four-poster beds) get specialised stair-climber dollies. The wide stairs accommodate larger items than terrace staircases, but speed matters less than careful protection.
Will Pacific Highway clearways block access to Gordon or Turramurra?
Pacific Highway has weekday clearway windows (6:30–9:30 AM and 3:30–7 PM) along the entire Upper North Shore stretch. Most Pacific Highway-facing properties have rear or side-street access — Stanhope Road, Robert Pymble Park, Wattle Street and similar parallel residential roads work mid-day. We schedule Pacific Highway frontages for 10am–2pm or after 7:30pm to avoid clearway risk.
When is the busiest moving period in Upper North Shore?
Two clear peaks: (1) late January through early February — private school year start drives family relocations into Knox, Pymble Ladies, Abbotsleigh, Ravenswood catchment areas; (2) end of December — corporate end-of-year moves and family upsizing. Saturdays year-round book out 4–5 weeks ahead. Mid-week mornings in March, May, August and October are easiest to secure.
Do I need a permit from Ku-ring-gai Council?
For most Upper North Shore moves the long private driveways mean street parking isn’t needed and no permit is required. Where street-only access is realistic (apartments near stations, smaller blocks in Roseville Chase, semi-detached homes in Gordon), Ku-ring-gai Council issues Temporary Moving Zone permits for approximately $90 with 3–5 business days processing. Hornsby Shire Council (northern boundary, Wahroonga north) has a similar process. We file on your behalf if required.
Can you handle pianos and heavy heirloom furniture?
Yes. Upper North Shore family homes often have grand pianos, antique sideboards, dining tables that seat 12, four-poster beds and other heavy heirloom pieces. We bring piano dollies, four-wheel steerable platforms for oversize items, and use a 3-man crew minimum for properties with multiple heavy pieces. Disclose pianos and antiques on quote so we plan the right crew size.
Do you handle inter-suburb moves within Upper North Shore?
Yes — Upper North Shore is a self-contained moving market with significant rightsizing within the area (family upsizes, retirees downsizing from Wahroonga family homes to Killara/Lindfield apartments). Inter-suburb moves within the Upper North Shore typically run shorter than cross-Sydney moves because there’s no Pacific Highway or Harbour crossing time. A typical Wahroonga-to-Killara family move runs 6–9 hours.
Do you offer storage for Upper North Shore moves?
Yes — our Mascot and Rosebery storage facilities are 35–45 minutes from Upper North Shore suburbs via the M1. Storage is $220 per module per month, 8 cubic metre modules (each fits roughly a 2-bedroom apartment’s worth). Common Upper North Shore use case: empty-nesters downsizing from large family homes, with a 2–6 month gap between selling and moving into a smaller property. Long-term storage discounts available for 6+ months.
